The critical compatibility gotcha: PGT switched from a 1.75-inch bottom roller bracket to a 2-inch bracket in 2019. If your door was installed between 2015 and 2018 and you’re replacing a bent bottom bracket, the new PGT OEM part won’t bolt to your existing track without a spacer plate. • Impact glass shows a dense spiderweb crack but hasn’t shattered. This is the laminated interlayer doing its job, but the panel has lost its structural rating. PGT’s impact glass uses a 0.090-inch SentryGlas interlayer; once cracked, the panel no longer meets Miami-Dade HVHZ standards and must be replaced as a unit, not patched.
• The door binds in the track during manual operation. North Miami’s salt air corrodes the vertical track’s interior surface, and PGT’s standard galvanized track (not stainless) develops raised corrosion spots after 6 to 8 years within a mile of the bay. The rollers catch, the opener strains, and the door rack warps.
• Daylight visible between slats when the door is closed. The rubber astragal seal at the bottom and the inter-slat vinyl seals harden in Florida heat. PGT specifies EPDM rubber rated to 158°F, but garage roof temperatures in North Miami regularly exceed 170°F in July and August. Hardened seals no longer compress, and the door fails the water-infiltration portion of its rating.
• The opener reverses immediately or stalls at the same point. PGT impact doors are 40% heavier than non-impact equivalents. The stall point is usually where the door transitions from vertical to horizontal track.
